Modern batteries push the limit of energy density far beyond what was possible only a few years ago. But with energy density comes the challenge of thermal stability.

This is where calorimetry comes in, including isothermal calorimetry.

The impact of calorimetry on battery safety

The various calorimetry techniques can be used for different measurements:

  • Isothermal calorimetry can measure battery heat release during charge and discharge cycles,
  • Temperature scanning calorimetry can measure battery heat capacity (i.e. accumulation) or temperature of decomposition of battery components.

While heat measurements are used to predict the increase in battery temperature during use or charging, the decomposition temperatures of the battery components help determine if these components can withstand this temperature rise without triggering a thermal runaway.
